NikeLab rolled out their Comme des Garçons Clear Dunk High Shoes last week, making the much-anticipated shoe available for purchase. These innovative and hi-style high tops were cleverly inspired by invisible, clear clothing.
Many shoppers probably are not aware of the inspiration behind these sought-after Dunks. Apparently, the see-through sneakers were inspired by a fairy tale. More specifically, their design was based on a tale written by Hans Christian Anderson. The story involves an emperor who wears invisible clothing, but he does not realize it. So he is exposed at all times. Thus, the CDG x NikeLab shoes.
According to Sneaker News:
“the see-through upper of the shoes interprets the story’s underlying contradiction of invisibility as transparency, which in today’s day and age is a commentary on information overload and over-sharing of the social media age.”
These retro sneakers feature a mix of premium black leather with clear panels and designed by Rei Kawakubo. The release of the Comme des Garçons x NikeLab Dunks was just in time for New York Fashion Week, and Nike is releasing even more limited-edition shoes for the celebration.
You can snag your pair of Comme des Garçons x NikeLab Dunks at CDG’s Chelsea boutique and Dover Street Market.
